Mary Ann Attard

Mary Ann Attard (b1983) graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art with a BA Hons in Product Design. Instinctively inspired by serendipity and people’s routines, Mary Ann Attard has an innate inclination towards the exploration of everyday life. Her design strives to take the user by surprise, bringing about an emotional impact by playing around with habits too often taken for granted. In love with the materials' intrinsic beauty and fascinated by their endless potential, she enjoys reshaping forms into new functions, keeping an eye on the sustainability and usability of the final product.

In the past years, she has been active both locally and abroad. Back in 2009, she exhibited her work at Designers Bloc at Earls Court in London, while her last solo exhibition, Fulu, was held in October 2011 in Valletta.

Her thesis project, the Hedonist Gift Set – a set of eccentric morning gifts, was positively reviewed by journals like Exibart. She won the 2nd prize Yellow Pencil D&AD Award Furniture Design Vitra 2008  for an installation sofa and was shortlisted among the ten finalists for the Bombay Sapphire Cocktail glass design 2008. She is currently working as a freelance product and furniture designer under the pseudonym of Xineza and lecturing Recycled Product Design at Wasteserv Malta.
